Dear Evans,

The Senate will vote this week and in coming weeks on bills that would jeopardize essential diabetes programs.

Make sure your Senators oppose these irresponsible cuts.

This week, the Senate will consider proposals to fund federal health programs for FY 2011. The proposals could include a vote on H.R. 1, the FY 2011 appropriations bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last week. This bill puts diabetes research and prevention programs in peril.

Without progress in research and prevention, one in three children will face a future with diabetes. The 105 million Americans with diabetes or prediabetes will continue to wait in vain for a cure. And costs for diabetes and its complications will grow astronomically.

Don’t let this bill – or any other funding proposals – endanger the health of millions of Americans: Tell your Senators to reject drastic cuts in FY 2011 health funding, including H.R. 1. Urge your Senators to adequately fund diabetes research and prevention programs.

The total annual cost of diabetes, including undiagnosed diabetes, gestational diabetes and prediabetes, was an estimated $218 billion in 2007, and will continue to grow exponentially – unless we let Congress know this future is not acceptable.

If we don’t take swift action now, the Senate could cut diabetes research and prevention programs.

  • Research studies funded at the National Institutes of Health, which are essential to move us closer to a cure and better treatments for diabetes, will be jeopardized.
  • The Center for Disease Control’s ability to help people avoid diabetes and its devastating complications would be severely reduced. This would lead to more hospitalizations and more emergency room visits, adding to the already high cost of diabetes. To prevent amputations, blindness and dialysis, we must act and act now.

If left unaddressed, diabetes will overwhelm our healthcare system with tragic consequences, and drastic cuts like those proposed in H.R. 1 would be a major setback in the fight to stop diabetes.

Cutting funding for these vital programs now would be shortsighted. Don’t let it happen. Tell your Senators to reject drastic cuts in FY 2011 federal health programs, including the cuts in H.R. 1.

Thank you for all you’re doing to stop diabetes.

I clicked on the “Click here to send our letter now!” and added this paragraph to the letter, after the first paragraph:

American Indians are currently on a “Longest Walk 3: Reversing Diabetes”, walk across America to bring awareness of the Diabetes Epidemic that is currently happening in Indian Country today! We know, as well as the American Diabetes Association, that the CURE is very near & as the First Americans, we are the protector of our own sovereign health. We ask that you reject drastic cuts in Fiscal Year 2011 funding for federal health programs, which includes the Indian Health Services for Native American Diabetes programs. As an American Indian with Diabetes, I know how bad it really is, since family & Tribal members are also affected.

Do it NOW!
